Manny and Carol held their ceremony at the dramatically beautiful First United Methodist Church of Coral Gables. It is a spectacular place to share a wedding celebration. The church doesn't allow for photos during the ceremony itself. However, they are quite gracious about reenacting the main elements of the wedding ceremony afterwards to capture them close up. Actually, it makes it a little easier for us, because we are as close as need be. We would recommend First United Methodist Church of Coral Gables to anyone in the Miami area who wants a genuinely grand and austere wedding ceremony location.

Carol looked absolutely radiant in her stunning white dress and Manny glowed when he first saw her. They wanted to have a chance to see each other before the ceremony. Mike and Sheree held their wedding celebration at Calvary Chapel church in Fort Lauderdale. It was a simple ceremony was only 100 of their closest friends (Ha ha ha). Baby Camilla's 1st Week Portrait Session.

Hello friends and family! Well today we finally get to share our wonderful blessing we have been waiting on for 9 months. Here is beautiful baby Camilla. She was born last week. This little bundle of joy was 7 Lbs 14 ounces, 21 inches long and with a full head of hair.

Here's the story, Monica's water broke around noon at the church. She wasn't having any contractions whatsoever. We went to the hospital for a quick check to see how far Monica had dilated. Everything was fine, so we went back home for a little rest before full labor kicked in.

That night around 10 PM the real contractions began. For 10 hours they continued to strengthen. Monica and I were hoping for a natural birth, but Camilla wasn't coming out crown first, she was coming out face first. Very rare and a little risky for natural births. Our midwife has only seen 3 of these in 15 years. Also, this was making contractions terribly painful for Monica (it is like having a 13 Lb baby!). So, we proceeded to go with the Doctor's counsel to have a "C" section. All went smoothly. Mommy Monica and baby are doing well.

Since we have been home Camilla has been a sweetheart. She rarely cries. Only if she is wet, dirty or hungry. Monica is such a wonderful mother. She is so loving and diligent with all the late night feedings (yes, I do get up to help and change diapers). She inspires me with her amazing, gentle love for Camilla.

Life is good here at the Copeland household. It is the best Thanksgiving anyone could hope for. We wish you and you family an abundance of blessings this Thanksgiving day.

All weddings are beautiful. Each one has a unique atmosphere. Some are simply superb. This belongs in the "breathtaking" category. From the getting ready, the reception and the group photos, each one was a wonderful combination of colors, characters and cheerfulness. Sometimes, people stress out on their wedding day. This was a day of peace and celebration. Caroline and Emmanuel were married in Sanford, North Carolina. A small, quaint town surrounded by tall, green trees and friendly people. You may remember them from their engagement photography session. We do enjoy destination weddings. The opportunity to shoot in a different community, different cultures and the challenges of flying with thousands of dollars of gear. It really creates a sense of excitement and adventure.

About our lovely Bride and Groom, Caroline and Emmanuel, without a doubt, these two are madly, passionately head-over-heels in love with each other. How can we know? The way they talk about each other and the joyful mood of the families as they come from around the world to celebrate their nuptials. Emmanuel and Caroline both speak with warm words of encouragement, adoration and respect about each other. Before they saw each other, they were both talking about how they want the other to enjoy the day and how excited they were to marry their spouse-to-be. It can be hard to define the subtle nuances of someone's thoughts, but before the wedding when we mentioned how beautiful Caroline looks to Emmanuel, his face lit up with a huge, warm, genuine smile of joy. He knows he is marrying his soul mate. He knows she is his destiny. Quite a humbling sight to see. What a privilege to be this couple's photographer.

Weddings are more than just a ceremony. They are more than just a party. Much more than a mere ritual. It is the joining of two souls, becoming as one, bonded by the power of true love. Monica and I are always touched by the emotions which surface during a wedding day. Parents crying with joy. Heartfelt toasts in memory of the couple. Stories are told of how they found their true love. We are not immune to the intimacy and importance of these couples inspirational unions. Justin and Celeste were such a couple that moved us in our hearts by way of their exuberant love for each other and their family. There was a genuine sense of anticipation by everyone throughout the day's festivities. Big grins, joyful laughter and encouraging words were shared with Justin and Celeste, as well as the other wedding guests. This is why we love our job. We are blessed to be a key part in capturing the memories of the day photographically.

On an artistic note, this wedding album was very easy to design. The wedding images were so beautiful that they simply seem to flow together on the page. We use Photo Junction to assemble the primary layout and then finish out the backgrounds and details within Photoshop.We highly recommend photo junction for ease of use and short learning curve. Simply watch the beginners tutorial it takes less than 15 to 20 minutes to really grasp the basics. Even better, it's free! Most of the backgrounds come from the actual wedding. While we are shooting we also keep our eye out for textures and colors that will integrate nicely into a wedding album. In order to really produce a beautiful wedding album it is necessary to shoot on location with the album in mind. Looking for similar articles, patterns or details as well as thinking like a photojournalist assists in having the right content to tell a story in a wedding album photography book.

Here is the digital design of Monica's baby shower cards. She picked the colors and I designed the layout. Initially, the colors were picked by looking at samples cards for paint at home Depot. It was helpful to see what they looked like on paper as well as in print. Then we got the matching Photoshop color numbers for the background. Actually, we ended up using the "Lilac Bouquet" as the main color for the baby's room. We used one of Monica's first maternity photo shoots as the centerpiece for the invitation. something simple, and drawing attention to the baby belly. ;-) We printed the invitations with Mpix Pro. We love their card stock, quality of print, ease of use and quick turnaround times. We will post some delicious photos from the baby shower soon.

We spent a lovely afternoon on the beach in Fort Lauderdale taking some relaxed photos for these family portraits. These children were so alive and full of energy! We ran and played with them up and down the beach. I think they were a little wired from all the marshmallows they were eating. I was jealous because I didn't get any. :-( Earlier in the day we had been to Miami and it is a different type of beach. All the Florida coastlaine is majestic and all the beaches are wonderful and beautiful, but each one is unique in it's color and atmosphere. Taking beach family portraits is always one of the most relaxing shoots we have as portrait photographers in Fort Lauderdale and Miami. There is something in the salty air that makes one feel so tranquil and peaceful.

Nicole and her family were staying at the Alexander hotel in Miami Beach. They were visiting on vacation and thought they would get some beach family portraits while enjoying the Florida oceans and Miami Beach lifestyle. It was a surprise session. Nicole didn't tell anyone that a photographer was coming, just to all dress in a specific color and style (although, we couldn't get her father to take his motorcycle boots off at the beach). monica and I arrived and started chatting with them and got them relaxed. This is a very special portrait session and a heart warming story. Joe and Sandra recently adopted Justin. Justin's mom struggled to care for him when he was a small child. Eventually, Justin's grandmother took him in and raised him for the first few years of his life. Joe and Sandra used to baby sit him occasionally during this time. Over the years it became a challenge for his grandmother to keep up with his energetic teenage exuberance. She released him into the custody of child care services. However, after hearing about Justin being in state custody, Sandra and Joe's love and compassion for Justin compelled them to seek and find him. After much time and trouble they finally found him many miles away in northern Florida. After a little bit of legal wrangling the courts granted Sandra and Joe to be Justin's parent's! Don't you just love happy endings? This happy, new family partnered with 4 Kids of South Florida to help throughout the entire process. This outstanding agency specializes in foster care and orphan adoption to loving homes throughout the South Florida area. Behind The Scenes Wedding Photography.

Here is a rare glimpse of what goes on behind the pretty pictures you see from a wedding. These photos were captured by our good friend Marie while we were shooting Mike and Sherree's wedding.

The top images show how we encourge brides and grooms to look their best, while I shoot from a ladder about 20 feet away. Monica or an assistant will help with a few pointers about posing. The bride and groom portrait sessions usually last about 30 minutes. This is the only time which we actually pose a couple. Some individuals feel uncomfortable with being “posed” however, this is where we often get the best images of the bride and groom. These always become the centerpieces of wedding albums, enlargements and thank you cards of our clients. Actually, this is something we do uniquely different. Our group shots of family and friends as well as the bride and groom portrait sessions are always filled with laughter, jokes and hilarious antics. We specialize in making sure the bride and groom, as well as their guests, are comfortable and relaxed in front of the camera. It can be quite a challenge to handle a camera, pose people, think creatively, work with assistants and be entertaining at the same time! However, it is a part of the job I truly enjoy. When all these elements come together to form images which couples cherish for decades to come its a genuinely rewarding feeling. it's quite common for brides to call us after they've seen their images and be teary-eyed because of the photographs our team has taken. It is a responsibility and privilege we take quite seriously. There is only one time to get these images taken and we have to get it right the first time. No excuses.

It was a joy to spend time with these boys. They are a blessing. There is a deep peace in my heart when I hear them laugh. Their smiles inspire me to encapsulate their youthfulness as brightly as the sparkles in their eyes.

These photos are like most of our children's photography sessions - a moment captured in time to be treasured in the future. All too soon these little ones will be driving their own cars and eventually be married with kids of their own.

These are a snapshot of their innocence. A glimpse into who they are now, and will be in the future. Many years from now, looking back to these images will spark a string of stories, laughter and tears. That is what photography should do. Make us remember.

Well, guess what? This maternity photography session is with my wonderful and beutiful wife, Monica! Yes, as the Bible says, we are "with child". Monica is already an amazing mom. She eats well, stays active and never complains. She is reading books and trying to exercise to be sure she is in shape for the delivery. She has had many long conversations with friends and family who have been down the pregnancy road before seeking experienced answers. Needless to say, our parents are thrilled. They were so happy for us. We just got back from visiting them in Oklahoma City. They really love Monica. They told me she was their favorite. I think they still like me.....? Dad said they want her to come back soon, and I could come also.....?

Of course, we told our families right after we discovered our little treasure. At first, we didn't tell everyone. We thought it best to wait for the first 3 months to be sure everything was going well and adjust to this ourselves. Gradually, we have been telling others. Now, we share it with all our friends. Thank you to all who have been so encouraging and uplifting. You energize us with your thoughtful support and words of wisdom!

We have begun thinking about all the baby accessories we will need. as well as an ever increasing "to-do" list. It is interesting to remember the "pre-baby" days when we thought we were so busy, and my, how quickly perspectives change. And, of course, this is even before the baby is born. But, we know it is all worth the chaos and business.

The thought of sharing this gift with Monica is very warming to my heart. We are praying to find the wisdom and discernment needed to raise a child in today's world.

There are so many things I want to say, but the words fall short of expressing how abundantly blessed and joyful I am. thanks for taking the time to read this and be a part of our story!

Here are the images from Paul's headshots. These were taken at downtown Fort Laudeadale. The first series was in the Broward County Library and the second was at the gardens near the Broward Center for Performing Arts. The garden area is simply gorgeous! What a great backdrop for executive photography headshots. Paul wanted some portrait photography to use in an upcoming PR campaign in conjunction with his business. Isabella is a gift from God. Her parents think so, and so do we! She is so sweet and chubby. Her cheeks are huge and squeezable. Her tiny hands are always trying to find something shiny to play with. When we photograph a family portrait we look for the story and the visual details of the moment. This little blessing gave us both. Andrea and Rob are great parents who cherish each moment with their little princess Isabella. Children photographers have a unique challenge - we can not ask the baby to pose, so we have to be creative on getting good child portraits. All in a days work. But, with a delightful little girl, it is a joy! Isabella seemed to be quite curious as to what was going on during the baby dedication. All the lights and laughing. She was an angel the whole time. No fussing or grumpiness whatsoever. Just glowing with her rolly-poly goodness!

4 Kids Celebration of Hope

Recently, 4 Kids, a local child foster and adoption agency, held "Celebration of Hope" at the Signature Grand in Fort Lauderdale. Here, awards were given for individuals who have made a significant influence in the lives of orphaned and abused children in South Florida. Many individuals shared their amazing stories of how they were touched by the mission of 4 Kids. Some were foster parents. Some were adopted as children. Some were teenagers who were supported by 4 Kids programs and are now adults with a future. It was also a chance to encourage the community to do more. 4 Kids president, Doug Sauder, challenged us all to find ways to advance the cause of foster parenting and child adoption in our communities. To seek and find long-term solutions for kids in crisis. He reminded us that together we can truly end the suffering of little children caught in the unfortunate cycle of neglect and abandonment. To continue relentlessly until every child in South Florida has a home.

Unfortunately, there are approximate 143 million orphans worldwide. There are thousands of children each day across America who end up needing a safe place to live when their parents have become abusive, neglected or abandoned them. Innocent suffering knows no age limitations - theses children range from newborn to teenagers. In South Florida, there are 3,600 kids in foster care. Many of these orphans sadly believe they will never again know the joys of a healthy, loving family life. There is hope! 4 Kids of South Florida is seeking to solve these problems by connecting children caught in the Broward County Child Welfare system with compassionate shelter, protection and hope. Vizcaya is a magical place. It is so green, alive and overflowing with beauty. Such a perfect setting for our engagement photography in Miami with Emmanuel and Caroline. Emmanuel actually proposed to Caroline that morning! He really did a fantastic job. They live up North in 2 different states. He flew to visit her, surprised her with plane tickets to Miami and then the day after they arrived he proposed! Quite a surprise. Emmanuel called and asked us to capture the romance of the day. We were delighted! So, we met at Vizcaya in downtown Miami. It was such a delicious backdrop for our engagement photography session. These 2 lovers were so adorable. As you can see, their love created a wonderful atmosphere to photograph.

Choosing a Wedding Photographer?

Many people are discussing the costs of wedding photography. Understanding how to determine the value of a wedding photographer can be quite a daunting task. Comparing one to another can be really frustrating. I know. I had to choose one for my wedding. And if you are wondering who it was it was Tracey Ann Jarrett and Martin at Photo Notions. They are truly talented wedding photographers.

Affordable wedding photography is a misnomer. It is different for everyone. Some couples have a budget of $500.00. Some have $50,000.00. If you think I am kidding, check out Denis Reggie and Mike Colon - both start at over $20,000.00. As a side note, if you can not see any real difference in the photos these guys take and the pictures your uncle Bob takes with his fancy point-and-shoot, or you may be looking for the least expensive photographer - this web site is probably not for you. For that - go to Craigslist.

Ok, for those that are still reading. Here is the reality, if your budget is $500.00 it is $500.00. Ain't nothin' we can do about it. So, how do you find a photographer regardless of price? Ah! That is why you are here and still reading my post. Yes? We have a few tips to help you choose a professional wedding photographer, regardless of budget.

However, you might say "Curtis, you are biased because you are a professional wedding photographer". Perhaps, but I am often asked this question and I had to select a photographer for my own wedding. This article isn't about justifying photography prices, or stating the defense about why we charge what we do, or to try to influence you to spend more money on wedding photography. Most likely, you have already made that decision. We just want to help you choose wisely. Why? Because I so often hear from recent brides "If I had only known.....". A good photographer can be found at any price (for that matter, so can a bad one). Let's just remember the price typically determines the outcome. Like Mama said: "You get what you pay for". So, if you have $500.00, you will get a $500.00 photographer. If you have $50,000.00, you get a $50,000.00 photographer. Keeping this in mind, let's see how we can find the best solution to your needs comparing wedding photography.

Let's look at a few basic principles and then we will look at multiple solutions.

1 - Your Uncle isn't the best solution because he has a fancy-schmancy camera he bought at Best Buy for $500.00 (is schmancy a word?). This is a serious concern. While Uncle Bob may be a great guy, the pressure and chaos of a wedding isn't for the weak if heart. Does he know how to pose? Does he know how to back up his digital files? Does he know how to white balance? Is he insured? Hey, I could go on, but here is the biggest issue: he is family. With that comes a lot of complexity. At least choose someone you don't know so you can be mad and stay mad at them if something goes wrong!

2. Does the photographer have a website? Not that having a website in itself is a plus - if they don't have a functional web site - they are not real players. It is possible to set up a blog for free and post pictures, so there are no excuses. Web site is a photographer's storefront. If they don't have one, they are not in business. Period.

3. Does the photographer have printed albums you can see? Photography looks much better in print than on the web. Also, a photographer must have the resources and ability to photoshop and produce wedding albums. In print is where it is best to critique a photographer's portfolio. The small details can highlight the poor photography or inexperienced photoshop skills.

4. Are they incorporated and insured? Depending on your budget, this may be negotiable. But, be forewarned, if they don't follow the law, are they really trustworthy? If they are not insured, what if something tragic occurs???? Think about it.

5. How will they deliver images to you? Seems simple, however, the lower priced "budget" photographers are notorious for loosing digital files. This has actually been one of the main complaitns from brides who have gone the low budget route. (we have a 3 way redundant backup process that costs $$$ thousands).

6. How many weddings have they shot? If they are doing it for their portfolio, be careful. This could be legitimate, but how comfortable would you feel knowing you are the photographer's guinea pig? And this is you ONLY wedding day. Along this line - can they provide professional references???

7. Be sure you speak directly with the photographer who will be covering your wedding. There are some "studios" who farm out the budget weddings to novice photographers. Just be sure you can talk to them beforehand to ensure you have a similar vision as to what your expectations are.

Justin and Celeste are such a fun and smiling couple. Their wedding celebration was a festive affair at the fabulous West Palm Beach Marriott. We began by having a "sneak peek" with the Bride and Groom. This is where the couple sees each other before the ceremony. It is much more relaxing for the couple. It takes the stress off of the wedding planning and allows the couple to spend a little quiet time alone. Everyone who tries it says they love it. We also will photograph the bride and groom portraits at this time. However, if you are the more traditional type, it is probably not your choice for portraits. The benefit of the "sneak peek" is to have the portraits and family group photos (often call "formal" photographs) completed before the reception. It does make for a nicer flow of the day. This way, immediately after the ceremony everyone goes directly to the reception. No one need wait for the group and family photos to happen (this process takes about 30-40 minutes in total).

The reception was an extravagant gala with some great dancing and fantastic food. The staff at the West Palm Beach Marriott are always professional, helpful and friendly. We recommend them for your wedding reception needs. Justin and Celeste's ceremony was quaint and simple. One of their good friends officiated. Monica and I had such a fantastic time. Justin and Celeste love to laugh. Their mood was continually jovial and positive throughout the day (as it should be!). Their family was also so kind and considerate. They were talking with us as if we were old friends.

On the technical side (for our photographer friends). It was quite a challenge photographically. It was an outdoor ceremony at night and the bridesmaids dresses and the groomsmen's tuxedoes were black. So, black backgrounds with black dresses and no ceilings to bounce a flash off of. A nice challenge for Monica and I! So, we kept it simple - off camera flash and reflected it towards the bridal party to create a nice, edgy, modern look to the images. We metered the flash instead of relying on the infrared transceivers (the infrared usually fails outdoors). The group photos were done before the sun went down, but because we were behind the Marriott building, the light was fading fast. So, we added a slight flash to fill in a little to the ambient. Usually, we will place 2 speedlites on stands off camera behind umbrellas, but we didn't have time. Makes for good catch lights in the eyes and good background separation. In the reception, we always gel the flash for tungsten, crank up the ISO, open the aperture wide, shoot around 125th shutter and then white balance from a bounce off the ceiling. We use a total of 3 flashes during the reception. One on camrea bouncing backwards at 45 degrees and 2 others bouncing directly up into the ceiling for ambient background. During the dancing, we will take the 50MM 1.4 and open it up. Makes for great images. Be very careful with depth of field and choosing your focus point! The depth of field with the subject at a distance of about 10 feet on a 50MM @ 1.4 is less than 12 inches. No room for slopping focusing!

Here is Ramon and Lorena's wedding photography slideshow as well as a few of our favorite images. Their ceremony and reception was held in beautiful Boca Raton, Florida at Calvary Chapel. It was a genuine joy to be there.

Ramon is a missionary in South America and Lorena does much charity work with the homeless in South Florida. Lorena is also quite the talented florist. She has an artistic touch for wedding flower designs. They both have a heart to serve and make a positive difference in the lives of others in need.

This is another great story of wonderful people meeting, and falling in love, getting married, but still desiring to help others in practical ways. As you can see from the photos, Lorea's smile is quite contagious. She is always laughing and telling jokes. Ramon is very courteous and passionate about his efforts in South America.

The wedding reception was at the Calvary Chapel's cafe La Piazza. A perfectly little quant place to hold intimate weddings. Chef Andrea Bettio is a masterful cook and the staff is always pleasant and friendly. We really love photographing weddings there.

Rahul and Anjali had a fabulous Indian Engagement in Bal Harbor, North Miami Florida. As typical, it was a multi-day event. Friday was the close family (only about 100 people!) and then Saturday's festivities were a little larger. About 200 close friends came to join in the celebration of this couple's engagement and the world famous Sea View hotel in Bal Harbor, Miami. Indian engagement ceremonies definately take a little different photography skill set than an average western america style wedding. The timing, colors, and lighting are much different. Egagement photography is always a special treat, but these two made it all the more wonderful. Rahul and Anjali were always asking Monica and I how they could help us! They were so cordial, friendly, cheerful and polite. They made us feel right at home. We loved sharing both days festivities with them. Monica and I love Indian food, culture and colors. Makes for a great day of photography!

Remember Richard and Erin's wedding? Their wedding album really looks splendid. They were wed at the Renaissance Boca Raton Hotel. The lush garden provided a spectacular backdrop as they exchanged their wedding vows. The Boca Raton Renaissance Hotel is a luxurious location for a wedding ceremony and wedding reception. The hotel staff is friendly, professional and always courteous. It is evident that their goal is excellence in customer service. We see many hotels and this team really does an outstanding job in Boca Raton, Florida! Richard and Erin’s wedding was top notch. Everything went as planned and on schedule (unusual for weddings!). This wonderful couple was so kind and warn to Monica and I (if you are new to the blog, Monica is my wife and we photograph weddings and family portraits together). The DJ, Scott Evans productions, was really good. He was keeping the groove going all night long. The flowers we beautifully arranged and the table center pieces were dazzling. Just a thought....

Probably the most luxurious place Monica and I have been to is the Ladera resort in St Lucia. It is famous for only having 3 walls in each room. One side of each room opens up to view the "twin pitons" and the majestic Atlantic sea. It is a breath taking sight. We went there for our honeymoon. It is listed as one of the top 10 resorts in the world. What is the most luxurious place you have been to?

We are still talking about Carlos and Sadia's Indian wedding held at Jungle Island at the Treetop Ball room. It was an Exquisite extravaganza of cultures and wedded bliss. We had a few of the Indian wedding album designs on our previous post, but some asked to see all of the designs. The slideshow above shows the 50 designs we made for our fabulous Florida newlyweds. They start off in a western style, but progress into a more eastern feeling and tone. We usually don't design this many spreads, but there were so many amazing photos, we couldn't stop! Design after design kept flowing with these beautiful and bold hues, patterns and textures. Designing an Indian wedding album is a unique challenge. The color palette, design and mood are radically different than the typical Western wedding. This adds even more drama and flair to the presentation. It was truly a joy designing this album! A real chance to do something creative, different and unique.

However, when two different cultures align, amazing things can happen. When the best of two worlds are creatively joined, it is a wondrous sight to behold. Sadia and Carlos are a such couple. They are both doctors. He comes from a Cuban background. Her family is Indian. Together, they are madly in love! It was such a sight to see their colorful wedding day celebration. Jungle Island held the wedding reception and ceremony. As always, the team at Jungle Island was tremendously helpful and professional.

I was adopted as a baby. Two months old, as a matter of fact. The adoption papers stated my maternal grandparents were American indian - Cherokee to be exact. However, I didn't grow up in that environment. I have lived in more than 10 cities in my life. I have worked with literally thousands of people in dozens of places. So, what does that make me? But, maybe you don't know much about me. Here's a little insider information:

My name is Curtis Copeland (thus the name of the website www.curtiscopeland.com)
I was born in Tulsa Oklahoma (Yes, I know the words to the musical)
I am a devout optimist (OK, not really, more of a "realist" with brief moments of complete joy and laughter)
I spend way too much time reading blogs of other photographers and Apple computers
I do not enjoy sports (Although I will occasionally watch a game)
I grew up watching Star Trek (Live long and prosper! See the connection with sports?)
Tivo is one of the most amazing things ever invented - I would trade my car for Tivo
I am madly in love with my wife, Monica - She was born in Colombia (The country!)
My favorite food is Peruvian or Mexican (hard choice... especially with a Colombian wife!)
I was almost arrested for taking pictures of railroad tracks - see image above - (they sent my fingerprints through Interpole!)
I love 80's music
My favorite TV show is "Dirty Jobs" - Mike Rowe is genuinely funny and original.
I was a professional musician in my early 20's
I really enjoy helping people - have been on several humanitarian projects around the world
I have been to: Italy (3 times), Israel, Romania, Guatemala, Peru, Colombia, St Lucia, St Thomas, Grand Cayman Island, Bimini, Bahamas, and more.... Want to go to India, China and Australia.... maybe someday.
People tell me that I am funny - actually, I am more goofy. Like the "3 Stooges kind".... True humor is a gift.
I have "celiac disease". My body can not process gluten. This means I can not eat wheat, malt or barley. Which means no bread, no cake, no beer and no whiskey. (Not that I miss whiskey or beer - but cake!??!?!!)

Jack and Charlie have a beautiful family. Everyone was in town visiting them in Boca Raton for Christmas and they wanted to get some nice Holiday family portraits. There was a lot of energy and joy as we headed out to the beach for our portrait session. The kids were really awesome. We had a lot of fun running and jumping in the air at the beach. What a great group of children. I think I had as much fun as them playing in the sand! Here is a sampling of the fun we had while celebrating the season with them.

Christmas in Fort Lauderdale Family Portraits for the Holidays

Family Portraits for the Holidays?

Well, it's the most wonderful time of the year. Especially in Fort Lauderdale Florida! Initially, we were to fly to Oklahoma city and visit my parents. However, after we boarded the plane in Miami, I checked and found out they had already closed the Oklahoma City airport (Love the iPhone!). Surprisingly, they let us off the plane with no hassles. We are quite thankful they did. We would have spent Christmas day stuck in St Louis (where our connecting flight was going). As usual, Monica found something positive in the process. Our good friends Elizabeth and Andrea invited us over to celebrate Christmas eve at their house. We had a wonderful time. Since we didn't end up flying, it allowed us an occasion to reflect upon our last year in South Florida. We had so many wonderful blessing and met some truly amazing people through wedding and portrait photography. We genuinely love being professional photographers. We are privileged to share some of the most memorable events in the lives of families celebrated through the art of photography. It is humbling. We wish abundant blessings upon you and your families this Christmas season and throughout the New Year. We look forward to sharing more of those special days with you all.

Peter And Joanna's Wedding Album - Calvary Chapel Weddings Fort Lauderdale Wedding Photographers Florida

Peter and Joanna are truly a remarkable couple. They are actively involved at their church and making a difference in their community and are always volunteering to help out in many ways. This lovely husband and wife were wed at their home church, Calvary Chapel, Fort Lauderdale. Pastor Charlie was the minister for the service. We were genuinely impressed with the flower arrangements. The church's restaurant, "The Grill" was the catering service and the food was fabulous. Their reception was also held on the property. This makes the day quite a convenient for the bride and groom as well as the guests. No need to travel between the ceremony location and the wedding reception! As always, the staff was delightful, professional, smiling and helpful. We really enjoy photographing Calvary Chapel weddings in Fort Lauderdale.

After the reception we went to Fern Forrest Park and shot a few bride and groom portraits. They look great as a couple. These two are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. Peter and Joanna are now actually really good friends of ours and we hang out quite a bit. Becoming friends was an unexpected perk via being their Fort Lauderdale wedding photographer! Many thanks, Peter and Joanna, not only for letting us be a apart of your wedding day, but also a part of your life.

Below is a presentation of Elizabeth and Andrea's Bride and Groom portrait session. Elizabeth and Andrea were married 3 years ago. It was a beautiful ceremony. However, they were not totally satisfied with their photos and wanted beach wedding photography. So they decided to re-shoot in a new wedding dress. They didn't want the "Trash the Dress" type of portraits. They wanted something elegant and refined. Although they can not salvage the memories lost from that day, they can at least enjoy some bride and groom photos they will treasure for many years. We printed it with Kiss Wedding Books. They make incredible albums. The attention to detail is impeccable. The ordering process is streamlined and easy. Thank you, Elizabeth and Andrea, for letting us reshoot your wedding photography. These are a few words that come to mind when thinking about Lauren and Jorge. This delightful couple were wed June of 2009. Their wedding was simply spectacular. Who inspires you? For myself, it is my wife, Monica. She is the more analytical of us (she works in an accounting office). I am the more creative (go figure). But I love how she sees things from a different viewpoint. It is energizing when we talk about things from different viewpoints, yet we still harmonize and make beautiful music together. Different perspectives, but still in alignment. I learn so much from her. She inspires me.

Shhh! Here's a sneak peek of Sadia and Carlos's wedding pictures. We were processing them and had to share these with you. Don't they make a beautiful couple? And, the wedding was magnificent. So much rich color and detail. The food was incredibly delicious. They served both Cuban and Indian food at the reception. As always, the staff at Jungle Island was pleasant, professional and helpful to Sadia and Carlos as well as their families. Their wedding ceremony was part traditional Cuban Catholic and part Indian wedding. The wedding reception had an expressive explosion of colors, sounds, tastes and cultures! The lamb was scrunptous. Brian and Amy's Beach Wedding - Ocean Manor Fort Lauderdale

Brian and Amy are an inspiring couple. They are gentle, kind and genuinely thankful for each other. Their beach wedding was breathtaking. The sun was low in the afternoon horizon as she walked down the sandy isle with her father proudly at her side. Amy looked radiant. Brian was held awestruck seeing her beauty. It was touching, to say the least.

The ceremony and reception were at the Ocean Manor Resort Hotel in Fort Lauderdale. Mary Mulhern and her team did a fantastic job on setting up the wedding details. The outdoor reception dinner was simply sublime. The food was delicious (and we have had a lot of wedding food!).

This Jim and Michelle's digital wedding album design. This lovely couple had a magnificiently beautiful beach wedding in Del Ray Beach, Florida. It was a truly spledid affair. The reception was held at the Santa Barbara Club in Del Ray Beach. The food was great! We had a full team there, so we set up the mini-studio and took pictures of all the guests. There was some really great wedding photography portraits from that evening.

Jim and Michelle asked us to join the on their honeymoon in St Thomas. How could we resist? We had so much fun going to different locations around the island. The lush tropical landscape and vintage textures of the old buildings made for magical backdrops to our wedding photography portraits. Jim and Michelle were so energetic and passionate. Dashing around the island while we snapped photos like crazy. Made for some fabulous "in wedding photography"! It was so wonderful to be aable to share these charming moments with this newlywed couple. Thanks for letting me come along!

Laughter and Giggles. That is the language of Bill and Monica. They are always cracking jokes (usually corny ones!) Always smiling. Always upbeat and cheerful. Always ready with a kind word. These two are like peas in a pod. The whole day of their wedding we laughed like little kids. What fun!

Their wedding was held at Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale. They had their ceremony and reception at the church. Calvary has a full banquet facility. The food is fabulous and the staff is very experienced and professional. The staff is very experienced due to the very low turnover. Most servers have been working at the restaurant for years. By the way, Fort Lauderdale is a wonderful place to have a wedding. If you are thinking about having a destination wedding, this is the place. The local hotels are great and it is easy to get around.... But I digress (as I often do...)

Bill and Monica's wedding album turned our fabulous! This was a real treat to make. The story really came to life and the wedding album design came together almost on it's own.

Here is a view of Bruce and Lyli's wonderful wedding album. Their wedding album turned out beautiful. We used Graphi Studios to print this special work of art. They are hand made in Italy, just outside Venice. While working on the photos, it reminded us of how sweet their wedding day was. It was such a joy to be there. Seeing these two commit their live to each other was touching and tender. Bruce absolutely adores Lyli. He lights up when he looks in her eyes. And she genuinely respects and admires him for his character - and ability to make her laugh! The ceremony and reception was help at Calvary Chapel, Fort Lauderdale. Craig Huston was the officiant. Andrew Wooddell led the music. To see such amazing people get together through matrimony makes being a wedding photographer Fort Lauderdale a joy!

I can relate to this image. No, not the horse's rear end. I tend to learn most from my mistakes. I am one of those unfortunate souls who doesn't have the gift of learning vicariously. I don't learn from others mistakes. It seems I often need a kick in the pants (or face) to learn things. However, I do learn well from watching others in action. More of a kinesthetic learning type. I need to be involved in the process or the situation. My wife, Monica, is far more analytical. She can see problems coming around the corner. I love that about her! How do you learn best? What makes you nest retain information?

So You Want to Start A Photography Business? Photography Tips for The Brave at (entrepreneurial) Heart!

Often people ask me how can they start a business as a photographer. The photography business, it is extremely rewarding for a creative individual and it can also be quite a challenge. A few years ago when the economy began sinking there were many online articles suggesting to start a small home photography business. The idea was valid, however, there is much more to the photography business than simply taking pictures. There are a multitude of things to be learned in photography as well as within the business aspect of the industry. Photography itself is something that is never truly mastered. The greatest photographers of all time were perpetually students of the craft.

For those of you who want to "go pro" let's take a little test. How well do you know and understand the following concepts: "depth of field" "White balance" "RGB" "reciprocity factor" "flash ratio" "exposure latitude" "rule of thirds" "ISO" "light diffusion" "dragging the shutter" "exposure meter" "fill flash" "bounce flash". If words and phrases such as these leave you scratching your head you are probably not ready to take the plunge into the deep end of business and the photography. This list is just a few of the technical aspects of the camera. There are entire worlds to learn about Photoshop, post production processes, the world of online marketing, SEO, networking, printing, posing and the list goes on. If you know these terms well, then congratulations - you may be ready to begin your adventure into the realm of professional photography!

This isn't meant to discourage you. Quite the contrary. I'd genuinely like to see people succeed in the photographic business. However, the harsh reality is there is far more technical proficiency needed then simply owning a $1,200 SLR which was purchased at Best Buy. ( And yes, that is where I started!) This article is meant to serve as a baseline for your understanding of photography as well as set realistic goals. Hey, professional photography is not for the the faint of heart!

Now that we have that out of the way, let's discuss the steps that should be taken for someone who is seriously considering a foray into professional photography. Here are a few photography tips for you to ponder...

First, understand that photography business is 51% business. This seems to be the number one struggle for photographers. Most individuals start with the intent of spending the majority of their time with their camera taking photographs. The reality is there is insurance, Web hosting, marketing, advertising, budgeting, networking, Web content, client meetings, sales techniques, contracts, and many more tasks which are strictly business-related. Also, a significant part of my time is spent at the computer. This often involves following up on e-mails, blogging, reworking contracts and estimates, entering data into QuickBooks, researching keywords in Google, and many more tedious tasks. Plain and simple, be prepared to spend a lot of time doing trivial details. If you are administratively challenged such as myself this is nothing short of horrendously painful. Be realistic. It sucks.

Second, be sure you genuinely love photography. If you don’t the business side will make you hate photography. You need to love it enough to put up with the “dark side” of the business. Just to use myself as an example, I constantly think about photography. It isn’t a hobby. It isn’t just the lifestyle. It is a mindset. I wake up thinking about photography, I go to bed thinking about photography and as I go about my daily life I am constantly thinking about aspects of photography. When I talk to people I notice how the light is coming across their face and what I would do to change it for a portrait session. Or, I will see how someone is seated and think about how I would pose them for portrait. when I watch movies I make comments to my wife all the time about the lighting within the scene (she is an amazingly patient woman). when I see other photographers work by constantly critique and analyze how they accomplished this shot. It’s in my blood. He needs to be in your blood as well. And being a really good photographer isn't enough.

Third, constantly look at others to compare yourself with in quality. Early on I spent too much time looking at only my pictures. Because the scope of my vision was so limited I was overconfident about my photographic ability. Looking at other photographer's websites on a daily basis not only challenged me to get better, but allowed me to be realistic about my abilities and my areas of growth. It also was a source of inspiration.

Fourth, shoot often and continually experiment. What I now use as my typical portrait session techniques started off as experimentations. The more you shoot, experiment, critique, compare, and challenge yourself the better you will become as a photographer. Network with other photographers. Share ideas with them. They are one of your most valuable resources. Join a photography club. Shoot as a second shooter or an assistant for a wedding photography session. You will learn far more working side-by-side with someone than reading a blog, reading a book, our trying to do it all on your own. I wasted a lot of time trying to teach myself when I should've humbled myself and sought mentoring.

Lastly, don’t quit. If you have a genuine fire in your belly to be a photographer and you know you were called to it as a vocation never stop growing, challenging yourself, experimenting, networking, and sharing ideas with others.

Bruce and Lyli's Wedding Getting Ready - Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale Wedding Photography

Peace is an often elusive state of being. It's interesting to think that we seek after peace, but we actually find it in the moments we are most still. Peace isn't the absence of warfare or struggle, it is an inward strength and sense of well-being that cannot be artificially created. Finding peace is a real treasure. While spending time with Bruce and Lyli there was always an atmosphere of peace. Even in the moments of chaos at their wedding there was a sweet serenity and deep calm while in their midst. (Some weddings have more chaos than others!)

This couple genuinely "fell" in love. At one point Bruce actually thought he would be unmarried for the rest of his life. But the powers that be had a much different plan for him. He and Lyli met at a small group from Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale. Typical of how relationships start they began as merely friends. But over time their hearts began to draw towards each other. Before they knew what happened, they were madly in love. Bruce always mentions how he got the better end of the deal, but I think Lyli feels the same way. In truth, both of them were blessed with each other. Lyli And Bruce both have a servant's heart. They are always looking for ways to help others and to volunteer within their community. It is always so calming to spend time with them. It is like someone bringing a refreshing cold cup of water on a hot August day. It is renewing. It is peaceful. And in this day and age, that is a rare gift.

Andrew and Chrissy have a new gift. Little baby Jadon. He was Born at Boca Raton Community Hospital. He is simply adorable. He was quiet and sweet the entire time we were there taking pictures. He was such a great model for our newborn baby photos! Andrew wisely said, "Children are such a symbol of faith. You know they are there, but it takes 9 months before you can see them. Just like our faith inside of us. It is continually growing, but often we don't see it until months later." Little babies like Jadon are a wonderful reminder of all the good things in life. The hope of life renewed. A sense of purpose in the midst of chaos. Welcome, little Jadon!

Ian and Che Che's Wonderful Wedding - Boca Raton Wedding Photography Calvary Chapel

What makes up love? What is love's contents? What is the very substance of it? The Bible says this: "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices in the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails".
This came to mind when thinking about Ian and Che Che. Ian and I met several years ago when working on a project in Biloxi, Mississippi to repair damage from hurricane Katrina. He is a fiercely hard worker and has a great laugh. Che Che is a sweet, quiet girl. She is always more concerned about others than herself.
Here is part of their amazing story.

Ian and Che Che were to wed in July. About two weeks before their wedding date Che Che was in a major accident. While she was driving across an intersection in her compact car, a large 18 wheeler dump truck ran through the stop sign and hit her broadside. It completely demolished the car. Initially, she seemed okay. However, in a few moments it was evident something was amiss. They rushed her to the hospital and began running tests on her. She was actually in critical condition for a few days. We were all praying for her health and healing. Ian never left her side. He was always there to comfort and console her. He was truly sacrificial in the way he served her, loved her, and adored her. It was plain to see that the accident almost crushed his heart. As is says above, his love endured. His love hoped. His love never failed.

The great news is that love and prayer prevailed. Che Che Was determined to proceed with the wedding date as planned. Although she had daily painful regimens of rehabilitation she still continued planning and orchestrating their wedding. She was in quite a great deal of pain but you could never tell. She continually smiled and was so gracious. When Monica and I went to see them she asked what they could do to help us! Che Che Has a truly genuine and generous heart to help others. It is quite humbling to see someone with a tremendously giving nature. It is simply inspiring.

So, they went ahead with the wedding as scheduled. Although Che Che was in a tremendous amount of pain you could never tell it from the glowing grin and contagious laughter she shared with everyone. Her profound love for Ian was radiating from her face. When they walked into the reception they received a standing ovation. And it was well deserved.

Ian and Che Che you both serve as an inspiring example of true love.
